Broadband in a Box is a series of guides and policies which have been developed from the BDUK broadband pilot in 2016.  Cybermoor has provided open access to the documentation developed during the project. Our the objective is to develop a broadband-in-a-box solution (BBiaB) which could be used by other small, rural-based groups to develop their own broadband solutions.  Many such groups may be structured as a social enterprise, and sections of this guide provide information on this basis.

Introduction

Since its establishment in 2002, Cybermoor has been approached by many inedividuals and groups interested in improving broadband for their community.  While broadband4dummiestechnologies and expectations have changed since those early days, the approach has remained broadly the same.

Broadband in a Box is a series of guides and policies which have been distilled from our experiences of delivering the BDUK pilot in 2016. One of our objectives was to develop a broadband-in-a-box solution (BBiaB) which could be used by other small, rural-based groups to develop their own broadband solutions.  Many such groups may be structured as a social enterprise, and sections of this guide provide information on this basis.

The documentation provided herein is based on procedures and policies which were developed by Cybermoor to run our business, and it has been augmented to provide additional guides which have been identified as necessary and/or useful, by the BDUK project.

Using the Guide

This guide has been structured as a series of discrete sections to provide information for organisations who will likely be at different stages of their project development.

  • For those at the very beginning of a project and with no experience of the technology or such projects; it provides a basis for them to evaluate how they could develop their project
  • For groups who are already started, it provides policies and procedures which could help ‘fill in the gaps’ in their knowhow.

This guide is based on our experiences over 14 years and we do not claim that is the best approach, only that this has worked for Cybermoor during the current project.  There are many other examples of successful broadband projects and it is worth looking at all options before deciding what works best for your community.
