Clear skies and fine spring sunshine brought large crowds to Alston on 1 April to see the opening of the South Tynedale Railway's extension to its new terminus at Lintley. More than 600 people travelled on the first four trains and hundreds more watched from the lineside path and vantage points along the line. So many arrived that for the first train that there was a short delay whilst an extra carriage was attached to accommodate everyone.

whitley castleAt 330m (1050ft) above sea level, Whitley Castle "Epiacum" is the highest stone built Roman fort in Britain. It housed a garrison for about 500 men and was probably built to control lead and silver mining. Pottery found at a small scale excavation in the 1950s suggests that the fort was built about the same time as Hadrian's Wall, in the year 122.

Alston TIC celebrates its 10th year

Alston Art Fair

Alston Artists invite art-lovers to Alston's very first Art Fair, over the first weekend in December. Alston Art Fair, showcasing the work of seven professional artists at Alston House Hotel, coincides with the popular Alston Craft Fair, running from Friday 4 December to Sunday 6 December. Entry to both events is free, and their different venues are separated by only a couple of minutes' walk.

'On the Edge' Art Tour

Five local artists based in Alston, Garrigill & Carrshield have opened their studios to visitors during June and July. The 'On the Edge' Art Tour is part of the Northumberland Art Tour and will run each Sunday now until 18th & 19th July.
