As part of International Gimme Fibre Day next Tuesday, 4th November, Cybermoor is organising a range of events in conjunction with local partners to promote the benefits of fibre broadband. Throughout the day there will be lots of different things going on demonstrating fibre broadband and how it can make everyday online activities easier.

Signal Film & Media have opened their doors again to young filmmakers seeking training in any aspect of filmmaking.This exciting opportunity starting in October is open to all 16-19 year olds living in Cumbria.  The training is free and travel bursaries are available. Those selected will work towards their BFI Film Academy Silver Arts Award (a QCF Qualification).

Alston Moor is currently facing major challenges with regard to its existing school provision and it is looking highly unlikely that all three schools can continue to operate as they are currently. This is due to a decline in the number of children attending the three Alston Moor schools in recent years, both from the Alston Moor area itself and those choosing to send their children from neighbouring Durham and Northumberland. At Samuel King’s pupil numbers have dropped from 183 in 2004 to 120 this year, while at Alston Primary numbers are now 102, compared to 163 10 years ago and at Nenthead Primary, there are now 22 pupils, compared to 29 in 2004 (see roll number table at the end of this article for pupil numbers over the past 10 years).

Cybermoor Ltd is holding a General Meeting for members to learn about the new services and upgrade plans. This follows on from the last Cybermoor AGM in July when there was enormous interest in how Cybermoor would be developing broadband services with its new strategic partner, Briskona.

Come along to the Burning Wood Well / Sustainability event in Garrigill Village Hall on Sunday, 21st September to usher in the cooler autumn and winter months when all our minds turn to rising fuel bills and keeping warm! The focus of the event will be on renewable energy, building sustainable communities (in a wider context) and local projects.

There was a carnival atmosphere at the weekend as local people and visitors turned out in force to visit Alston Gala. Crowds gathered on Alston Front Street to watch the gala procession which started from Alston Primary School.  The procession was led by vintage tractors followed by Stanhope's 'Brass Exiles Band'.

Our wonderful community midwife, Sarah Hall, who has served the mothers and babies of Alston Moor for 18 years and has delivered over 500 babies during her career is retiring. Come and have a cup of tea this Saturday, 21st June from 2-4pm at Alston Quaker Friends Meeting Room to help her celebrate ... and bring your babies, no matter how big they are now!!
