Beautiful and tranquil places attract artists and writers and Alston Moor is no exception. Over the centuries WH. Auden, Charles Dickens, JMW Turner, Alfred Wainwright and more recently the poet Simon Armitage, have visited and been inspired by the North Pennines.

Today, the magic of the landscape and the spirit of freedom felt here continue to inspire contemporary painters, potters, photographers, blacksmiths, candlemakers, filmmakers, jewellers, musicians, poets and weavers. You will often find the creative community exhibiting together at local venues and seasonal craft markets or opening their studios.

Relax at one of our friendly caf├ęs and visit the art, glass and ceramics galleries and the cane workshop - a cluster of unique shops around Alston's market square. Nearby, look out for the ceramic panels at the entrance to the Butts from the market cross. These were made by local potters as part of a community arts project.

Make the most of your surroundings; be inspired to participate in a local creative workshop during your stay or plan your visit around an event.
