It's hard to believe that the bakery first opened its doors eleven years ago, but as it's now such a part of Alston's town centre, it would be even harder to imagine it not being there. The bakery operates as a workers' co-operative, which means the business is owned and democratically run by its employees. The bakery employs on average about 6-8 people at any one and has provided employment for over 40 people over the years, with a further 10 young apprentices learning new skills.

Meryl Baker, the original baker explained that in a way it was no coincidence that it was on Valentine's Day that they first opened their doors 11 years ago, since they started the bakery with the intention of "making food with love" and she says they are still doing this and even more importantly "still loving it". There were plenty of love themed offerings on sale, including a selection of heart shaped cakes and pastries, and even heart shaped pizza bases.

The Moody as they are affectionately known locally pride themselves on making handmade quality and healthy food using the finest locally sourced, organic or Fairtrade ingredients where possible. As well as their delicious bread range, they also have a varied selection of pies, pasties, wraps, pizzas, quiches, not to mention delicious scones, cakes, biscuits ... and you haven't lived until you've tasted their chocolate brownies and millionaire shortbread!

At the request of customers, you can also now buy some of their fillings, for example, spicy chilli bean, Indonesian peanut gado gado and pizza kits with base and topping mix. They even make their only granola.

They are very experienced at catering for anyone who may have special dietary requirements and are currently experimenting with a range of gluten free bread.

They will provide outside catering, including celebration cakes and buffets both small and large and are happy to provide you with a no obligation quote for any of your requirements.
