By Road:
- From the South and West come off the M6 at junction 40, head east and follow the A686 to Alston.
- From the North and West come off the M6 at junction 44 and follow the A69 towards Newcastle. At Brampton come off the A69 and follow the A689 to Alston.
- From the South and East come off the A1 at Scotch Corner and follow the A66 towards Penrith. Head into Barnard Castle and the follow the B6277 to Alston.
- From the North and East come off the A1 at Newcastle and follow the A69 towards Carlisle. After Hexham take the A686 to Alston.
By Public Transport:
Alston's local bus company Wright Brothers, together with Stagecoach, operate services from Nenthead/Alston to/from Hexham, Brampton and Carlisle, as well as Haltwhistle and Housteads (via Slaggyford). For an up-to-date timetable of services please see the Wright Bros website.
These services are also able to connect you with train services running from Haltwhistle, Hexham & Carlisle. Please note that some services run only during school and college term times, so please check before travel.
NB: From 3rd July 2009 the popular and long running service from Newcastle to Keswick (via Alston) operates during the summer months. This is one of the most scenic bus routes in Britain.
The 888 Service from Alston/Nenthead to/from Newcastle no longer operates (as of 1st May 2009 onwards) due to the pulling of the subsidy from Cumbria County Council.
