What to Do
Alston has many attractions for the visitor ... don’t miss a visit to the Old Station Yard, home to the South Tynedale Railway, the highest narrow gauge in the country. Buy a ticket in the restored Victorian station building for a leisurely ride on one of the beautifully restored steam and diesel locomotives, through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne Valley. Follow this up with a visit to the fascinating HUB Transport and Heritage Museum located next door to the station, depicting 150 years of local history. Nearby there are the restored Lead Mines of Nenthead Heritage Centre and Killhope Leading Mining Centre, telling the stories of the history and geology of the area, now open as visitor attractions.
